1. Who we are
FijiHindi is a free language learning app built and operated by Priscilla Prakash, a sole operator based in New South Wales, Australia. This policy explains how we handle your personal information when you use the website at fijihindi.com or the iOS app.
We are the "data controller" (under GDPR) and the "APP entity" (under the Australian Privacy Act 1988) for the information described below.
2. What information we collect
We only collect what we need to run the app and improve it.
- Information you provide: email address, name, family's faith (Hindu / Muslim / Christian / Sikh / Other), city and country of residence, approximate age range, family tree entries, and any feedback or word-corrections you submit.
- Information generated by your use: lessons completed, phrases learned, streaks, conversations practiced, last activity date.
- Technical information: device type, browser type, operating system, anonymised IP address, and standard server logs. Collected automatically to keep the app secure and running.
- Analytics events: page views and feature usage via Google Analytics 4, in aggregated and de-identified form.
We do not collect government identifiers, payment details, health information, location coordinates, contacts, photos, or microphone data.
Religious affiliation is treated as "sensitive information" under Australian law. We collect it only with your consent and only to personalise greetings inside the app (e.g. Ram Ram vs Salaam).
3. Why we collect it (lawful basis)
- To provide the service — save your progress, personalise the experience, deliver lessons. Lawful basis: performance of a contract / your consent.
- To improve the app — understand which lessons people complete, where they get stuck, what words need correction. Lawful basis: our legitimate interest in operating and improving a free educational service.
- To communicate with you — send occasional updates about FijiHindi, ask for your feedback. Lawful basis: your consent (you can unsubscribe at any time).
- To comply with the law — respond to lawful requests, prevent fraud, protect our users.
4. Who we share it with
We do not sell your data. We do not share it with advertisers. We use a small number of third-party services to run the app, each bound by their own privacy obligations.
- Supabase (database and authentication) — stores your account profile and learning progress. Hosted in Asia Pacific (ap-northeast-1, Tokyo).
- Netlify (web hosting) — serves the website and processes API requests. Global CDN, mostly USA.
- Google Analytics 4 (analytics) — anonymised event data only. We have IP anonymisation enabled. Hosted by Google in the USA.
- ElevenLabs (audio generation) — generates pronunciation audio. No personal data is sent. Hosted in the USA.
- MailerLite (email broadcasts, when applicable) — stores your email so we can send updates. Hosted in the EU and USA.
5. International data transfers
FijiHindi is operated from Australia. The third-party services above mean your information may be processed in the United States, the European Union, and Japan. Where required, we rely on Standard Contractual Clauses or recognised adequacy frameworks for these transfers. By using the app you agree to this transfer.
6. How long we keep it
- Account data: for as long as you keep your account active, plus 30 days after deletion (for backups to cycle through).
- Analytics data: retained for 14 months in Google Analytics, then automatically deleted.
- Feedback and word reports: retained for as long as we use them to improve the language content (typically indefinitely, in de-identified form).
- Server logs: retained for up to 90 days for security and debugging.
7. Your rights
Under the Australian Privacy Act and GDPR you have the right to:
- Access a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
- Correct any inaccurate information.
- Delete your account and personal information (the "right to be forgotten").
- Withdraw consent for any processing based on consent, at any time.
- Object to processing based on our legitimate interests.
- Export your data in a portable format.
- Complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au or, if you are in the EU, to your local data protection authority.
To exercise any of these rights, email hello@fijihindi.com. We respond within 30 days.
8. Deleting your account
You can delete your account and all associated personal information by emailing hello@fijihindi.com with the subject line "Delete my account". Deletion is actioned within 7 days. A small amount of anonymised, aggregated data may be retained for analytics integrity.
9. Security
We use industry-standard measures to protect your information: HTTPS everywhere, encrypted storage at our hosting providers, least-privilege access, and Supabase Row Level Security. No system is perfectly secure. If we discover a breach involving your personal information, we will notify you and the OAIC within 72 hours, as required by the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme.
10. Children's privacy
FijiHindi is rated 4+ in the App Store because the content is age-appropriate, but it is designed for users aged 13 and over. If you are under 13 (or under 16 in the EU), please ask a parent or guardian to use the app with you. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 without verified parental consent. If you believe we have, contact us and we will delete it.
11. Cookies and tracking
We use a small number of cookies and similar technologies:
- Essential cookies for logging you in and saving your progress (browser localStorage).
- Analytics cookies from Google Analytics 4, with IP anonymisation enabled. You can opt out via your browser settings or the Google Analytics Opt-out add-on.
We do not use third-party advertising cookies. We do not track you across other websites.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of the page reflects the latest version. If we make material changes (for example, collecting new types of information or sharing with new third parties), we will notify you by email or in-app before the change takes effect.
